Ingolstadt / San José Chiapa, June 11, 2025 – Audi is expanding the new Q5 family: in addition to the combustion models with MHEV plus technology, the SUV and Sportback will also be launched as plug-in hybrid models (PHEV). Both the Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro develop 299PS (220 kW), while the new generation of high-voltage batteries in the Audi Q5 e-hybrid models has around 45 percent more capacity. As a result, 25.9 kWh (net 20.7 kWh) of power is available for electric driving.

With the new Q5 family, Audi has embarked on the next chapter in the success story of the premium SUV in the mid-size class. The Audi Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and Audi Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro plug-in hybrid models also bring all the advantages of an SUV and Sportback to the road: space, versatility, suitability for everyday use, quattro drive, plus an even more progressive and dynamic silhouette. A heightened design language, state-of-the-art combustion-engine technology, and the new operating concept are additional outstanding features of the new generation. With a system output of 299PS (220 kW) and an electric range of up to 62 miles, the plug-in hybrid models combine a sportily comfortable driving experience with a balanced blend of performance and efficiency.

The new Audi Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and the Audi Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro are driven by a 2.0 TFSI engine with an output of 251PS (185 kW) and an electric motor. With 299PS (220 kW) total system power, 0-62mph is possible in just 6.2 seconds and top speed is 155mph. The electrified dual-clutch transmission in conjunction with the quattro ultra drive ensures a sporty yet comfortable driving experience.

One new development is the high-voltage battery, whose cells in the Q5 e-hybrid are arranged on two levels, one on top of the other. Audi has boosted the battery’s capacity to 25.9 kWh (net 20.7 kWh), roughly 45 percent higher than its predecessor. Maximum AC charging power is 11 kW. If the battery is completely empty, it takes 2.5 hours to charge it to 100 percent.

Two operating modes are available: “EV” and “hybrid.” In EV mode, the SUV and Sportback run exclusively on electric power. When driving in hybrid mode, the hybrid management system maintains a specific charge level as needed in order to save enough electrical energy for later use. In addition to the automatic hybrid mode, the desired charge level can now be individually selected for the first time using a digital slider.

Audi has also significantly increased the regenerative braking performance. The degree of thrust recuperation in EV mode can be adjusted to three different levels using paddles on the steering wheel. The vehicle recovers energy automatically when this function is activated. This is based on route data stored in the navigation system. The Audi Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and Audi Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro can also recover energy automatically without active route guidance. The hybrid management system of the new models is designed for efficiency, flexibility, and maximum customer comfort and automatically selects the optimal operating strategy.

The Q5 e-hybrid models stand out above all with their upgraded standard equipment, which includes the S sports suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights plus and LED rear lights pro as standard. The MMI experience plus infotainment system, which also comes as standard, is equipped with the Audi Application Store, a smartphone interface, and the Audi sound system. One especially practical feature is the fully adjustable rear seat bench plus. It can be moved lengthwise, and its angle can be adjusted as well.

The Audi Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro is available in the UK starting at £56,740 (OTR). The price of the Audi Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro starts at £59,240 (OTR). Produced in San José Chiapa in Mexico, the new PHEV models will be available to order in the UK starting in July 2025. The initial launch is planned for the third quarter.

Upgraded standard equipment for SUV and Sportback
Like the combustion-engine models, the Audi Q5 e-hybrid models have also significantly improved key attributes and offer a comfortable feeling of space – something that people notice right from the moment they get into the car.

The fully adjustable rear seat bench plus is part of the standard equipment of the plug-in hybrid models. It can be moved lengthwise and its angle tilted, increasing the boot volume or comfort for rear passengers as required. At the same time, the rear bench seats three people comfortably. The SUV has a boot volume of 438 litres. The Sportback offers 433 litres of storage space. With the rear seats folded down, the transport volume increases to up to 1,358 litres in the SUV and 1,300 litres in the Sportback.

Other practical features include a larger storage compartment under the center armrest compared to the previous model and numerous smaller storage areas for sunglasses, keys, and other everyday items, a cooled inductive charging tray with 15 watts of charging power in the front centre console as well as two USB-C ports in the front and two in the rear. Available with the Sound and Vision pack, the USB ports in the front support charging capacities of up to 60 watts; the rear ports even support charging capacities of up to 100 watts. This means that larger devices such as laptops can be safely powered and charged while driving.

Intelligent drive management for greater efficiency
The hybrid management system of the new models is designed for efficiency, flexibility, and maximum customer comfort and automatically selects the optimal operating strategy. The electric drive is provided by a permanently excited synchronous motor with a peak output of 129PS (105 kW). The electric motor is integrated into the housing of the seven-speed S tronic. The full system torque of 450Nm is available even at close to idle speed. The power electronics (pulse inverter) used in the plug-in hybrid models of the Q5 are a new development. The pulse inverter is smaller, lighter, and more efficient, thus reducing electrical consumption. Consumption in hybrid mode is therefore also lower.

Battery capacity and energy density significantly increased
The heart of the new Q5 plug-in hybrids is the new high-voltage battery (HV battery) at the rear of the vehicle. Audi has boosted its capacity to 25.9 kWh (net 20.7 kWh), roughly 45 percent more than its predecessor. The HV battery is 517 × 880 × 302mm in size for the best possible integration into the available installation space. The further developed and significantly optimized interaction between the mechanical friction brake and energy recovery via the electric motor has also increased regenerative braking performance.

The battery cells for the Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro are arranged on two levels due to the available space and are integrated into the rear section of the car. Each prismatic cell stores approximately 46 percent more energy than the cells previously used in high-floor vehicles in the C segment. Each cell has a charge capacity of 70 ampere-hours (Ah). The raw material composition of the 102 cells enables a higher energy density. Six stacks with 17 cells each form a unit and are connected in series.

As far as the arrangement of the battery cells is concerned, Audi is pursuing a new approach with cell-to-pack. In this process, the cells are no longer placed in a battery module but are glued directly into the battery housing. The higher packing density means that the energy content and energy density of the HV system can be increased while taking up less space. Thanks to technical developments in cell chemistry, higher electrical output is available compared to the previous generation, even at a low state of charge and low outside temperatures.

The maximum possible AC charging power has been increased from two-phase 7.4 kW to three-phase 11 kW, depending on the respective infrastructure. With this increase, the HV battery’s zero-to-100-percent charging time has been reduced to just 2.5 hours. A charging cable (mode 3, plug type 2) for convenient charging at home and on the road is included as standard. Audi’s own charging service, Audi charging, provides access to numerous AC charging points in 28 European countries on request.

More energy recovery in overrun and braking mode
Compared to the previous generation of PHEVs, Audi has significantly increased regenerative braking performance. The PHEV model fundamentally tries to drive on electric power for as long as possible and to fully utilize the available battery charge en route to the destination. The phases in which the driver takes their foot off the accelerator pedal are crucial for the efficiency of the plug-in hybrid drive.

In such situations, overrun recuperation is controlled via a defined deceleration depending on the selected drive level. Automatic recuperation can also be preset in the MMI in driving levels D and M; the vehicle then varies the recuperation automatically.

The parameters for this are route data stored in the navigation system such as gradients, curve radii, town signs, and speed limits. Another important factor is the traffic ahead. As soon as automatic regenerative braking is selected, predictive signals are fed into the overrun regenerative braking function with the help of Predictive Efficiency Assistant (PEA). The new Q5 e-hybrid can also recover energy automatically without active route guidance.

When the brake pedal is pressed during deceleration, the Q5 SUV e-hybrid quattro and Q5 Sportback e-hybrid quattro can recover up to 88 kW of power and feed it into the HV battery. When operated as a generator, the electric motor accounts for more than 90 percent of all deceleration processes. The integrated brake control system with blending capability (iBRS) ensures pressure-free braking and the best possible energy recovery. The hydraulic wheel brakes are only used for harder braking manoeuvres. This has no effect on the braking feel for the driver, as the brake pedal and brake hydraulics are decoupled.

Recuperation level adjustable via steering-wheel paddles
Thanks to the new E3 electronics architecture used in the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), the degree of thrust recuperation in electric driving mode (EV mode) can be adjusted to three different levels using paddles on the steering wheel, just like in the all-electric models. Electric braking and thus the recuperation level are selected using the left paddle (minus). The right paddle (plus) can be used to reduce the recuperation level. The paddles can thereby be used to set a higher level of deceleration before a turn, for example. At level zero, the plug-in hybrid coasts freely without additional drag torque when the foot is taken off the accelerator pedal. With this setting, energy is only recovered when the brake is applied.

Intelligent operating strategy for maximum efficiency
Two operating modes are available in the new Q5 PHEV models: “EV” and “hybrid.” In EV mode, the PHEV models run exclusively on electric power. The combustion engine is only switched on in the following situations: by deliberately deselecting EV in the switch bar below the panoramic display or via the MMI; in driving program S; via the selected mode of the Audi drive select dynamic handling system; or when starting route guidance with hybrid assist activated. If navigation route guidance is activated, the hybrid assistant takes the route data into account when selecting the drive mode. The combustion engine also engages during kickdown, and EV mode is deactivated until the kickdown action is over. If none of these situations occur, the new PHEV models use the HV battery in EV mode until it is completely discharged. The digital slider used to control the desired state of charge via the MMI in hybrid mode cannot be operated in EV mode; that is because the battery charge will be fully utilized in electric mode. EV mode enables speeds up to 87mph. The PHEV models can be started either in EV mode or in hybrid mode. The mode used last is the default mode for when the vehicle is started next.

When driving in hybrid mode, the hybrid management system maintains a specific charge level as needed in order to save enough electrical energy for later use, for example for electric driving in the city.

When it comes to efficiency-optimized consumption, hybrid mode is most efficient for both short and long distances. Depending on the driving situation and the driver’s power needs, the operating strategy decides whether to drive in electric or hybrid mode in order to be as efficient as possible. The PHEV model prefers to drive electrically in urban areas. At higher speeds, the proportion of hybrid driving increases. With active route guidance, the operating strategy takes the planned route into consideration. The operating strategy then automatically selects the best possible energy configuration for the desired route. To achieve the highest efficiency, the vehicle calculates which parts of the route are suitable for electric driving. For example, electric driving is preferable where speeds are likely to be low, such as in urban areas and traffic jams. When the hybrid assistant is activated and route guidance is on, settings such as the desired charge level will be overwritten to ensure an efficient operating strategy.

On top of the automatic hybrid mode, the desired charge level can now be individually set for the first time using a digital slider. Drivers can use it to precisely define how high the charge level of the HV battery should be. The charge level can also be set before your trip, so that there will be enough energy available for electric driving at the destination if so desired, or if there is no charging option there. The desired charge level can be set using a digital slider on a percentage scale. If the target state of charge (SoC) is lower than the current SoC, the battery will be discharged down to the target level. If the target and current values match, power will mainly come from the combustion engine – in order to maintain the current SoC. If the target SoC is higher than the current SoC, the vehicle will be powered by the combustion engine – in order to recharge the battery. The battery is charged with a view to maximizing efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. This means that the combustion engine only charges the battery at speeds above 40 mph; at low speeds, the charge level is simply maintained. This maximizes efficiency and enables partially electric driving in the city or in stop-and-go traffic. The HV battery can be charged in this way up to a 75-percent state of charge. This ensures that the battery is charged with maximum efficiency while driving. To increase the battery’s charge above 75 percent, an external AC charging source is required.

Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA – the most efficient, intuitive and intelligent Mercedes-Benz ever – is now available to order in the UK. Prices for the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology in Sport Edition specification start from £45,6151, with AMG Line Edition and AMG Line Premium Edition specifications available from £49,3751 and £51,7701 respectively.

Mercedes-Benz CLA mit EQ Technologie; Exterieur: AMG Line Plus, MANUFAKTUR patagonienrot metallic
Mercedes-Benz CLA with EQ Technology; exterior: AMG Line Plus, MANUFAKTUR patagonia red metallic

The CLA is the first model in a completely new family of vehicles underpinned by the flexible Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), which has been designed to accommodate both electric and high-tech hybrid drivetrains. Initially the CLA is available as an all-electric model: the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology is equipped with an 85 kWh high-voltage battery and a 200 kW (272 hp) electric drive unit mounted on the rear-axle. The CLA 250+ can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 6.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 130 mph. Additional battery and motor configurations will be available in the future.

The new CLA 250+ with EQ Technology has a range of up to 484 miles2 in Sport Edition specification and can be recharged at up to 320 kW – meaning over 200 miles of range can be added in just ten minutes3.This is made possible by numerous innovations taken directly from the VISION EQXX including the 800-volt electrical architecture and advanced electric drive unit (EDU). Developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-Benz, the EDU features a two-speed transmission that benefits performance and efficiency. The CLA’s low drag coefficient of 0.214, the standard air-to-air heat pump, intelligent recuperation and optimised route guidance with Mercedes-Benz Navigation with Electric Intelligence also have a significant positive impact on driving efficiency.

Later this year the CLA will be offered as a hybrid with a new four-cylinder combustion engine and 48-volt technology, with an electric motor integrated into its new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Every new CLA is equipped with the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) – the fourth Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) generation. The new AI-enhanced system, developed in-house, makes it possible to equip every CLA with a supercomputer connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. This enables regular over-the-air updates for the most important vehicle functions, including driving assistance systems.

MB.OS opens up a new world of personalised experiences and intuitive interaction between human and vehicle. For instance, the latest MBUX generation is the first in-car infotainment system to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) from both Microsoft and Google. With generative AI, the new MBUX Virtual Assistant revolutionises the relationship between vehicle and driver. It enables complex, back and forth conversations and even has short-term memory5.

Every CLA is equipped with a 14” centre display with smartphone integration and an integrated video camera, powered by state-of-the-art high-performance chips and real-time graphics from the Unity Game Engine. The MBUX Superscreen, which adds a second 14” display for the front-seat passenger, will be available to order after the initial launch period.

All electric CLAs feature an illuminated front panel. A total of 142 individually animated LED chrome-effect stars create a distinctive brand signature. The illuminated grille greets and bids farewell to the driver with various animations. Under the bonnet is a 101 litre ‘frunk’, adding additional luggage capacity beyond the 405 litre boot.

Additional standard equipment includes a large panoramic glass roof. There is no need for a roller blind:an infrared film 250 nanometres thick protects against glare, while a 200 nanometre Low-Emissivity coating on the inside of the glass protects against excessive heat. From launch Sport Edition models are also equipped with THERMATIC automatic climate control, heated front seats with four-way lumbar support, LED High Performance headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist, 18” alloy wheels, heat-insulating dark-tinted glass and GUARD 360° vehicle protection.

AMG Line Edition specification adds AMG bodystyling, flush-fitting door handles with KEYLESS-GO and Digital Vehicle Key compatibility, a multifunction steering wheel in Nappa leather, Surround Lighting with animated projections of the Mercedes-Benz star pattern, ambient lighting and wireless device charging. The AMG Line Premium Edition introduces equipment such as 19” alloy wheels, MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and the Night Package.

The new CLA is equipped with extensive safety features including Blind Spot Assist, Manoeuvring Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and Brake Assist. DISTRONIC Distance Assist is also included. Additional comfort assistance systems are bundled under the name MB.DRIVE.

Customers can place an order through the Mercedes-Benz Online Showroom or by visiting a Mercedes-Benz Agent.
Detailed pricing and specifications are available on the Mercedes-Benz website.

1 All prices quoted are recommended ‘on-the-road’ prices, including the Road Fund Licence applicable to the standard model plus delivery charge (£730.00 incl. VAT), new vehicle registration fee (£55.00) and number plates (£25.00 incl. VAT). VAT is calculated at the standard rate of 20%.
2 The specified values were determined in accordance with the prescribed WLTP (Worldwide harmonised Light vehicles Test Procedure) measurement method. The ranges given refer to the European market. The energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of a car depend not only on the efficient utilisation of the fuel or energy source by the car, but also on the driving style and other non-technical factors
3 At DC fast-charging stations with 500 amps based on the WLTP range.
4 Drag coefficient may vary depending chosen equipment, e.g. wheel design. Quoted figure may include equipment not available in every market
5 A personal Mercedes me ID and agreement to the Terms of Use for the Mercedes-Benz Digital Extras are required to use the services. In addition, the vehicle must be paired with the corresponding user account. Upon expiry of the initial term, the services can be renewed for a fee, provided they are at that point still offered for the corresponding vehicle

Sussex-based waste management specialist The Recycling Partnership has completed its transformation to an all-Mercedes-Benz Econic fleet of 21 refuse collection vehicles, with the arrival of two new chassis from Dealer SAGA Truck & Van.

Transport Manager Andrew Burgess said: “We’ve run Mercedes-Benz vehicles for some years but they came from several different sources and other manufacturers were represented in the line-up too. When I took on this role a year ago, I wanted to standardise – not just on one vehicle, but also one supplier.

“This simplifies the job of fleet management but also allows us to develop a relationship with a trusted partner, both for vehicle acquisition and ongoing support. We reached out to several potential suppliers but the response from SAGA and Sales Executive Shaun O’Hara stood out as by far the best.”

The two new trucks are 6×2 Econic 2530 models, their rear-steer chassis fitted with Dennis Eagle compactor bodies and Terberg bin lifters. Each is powered by a 7.7-litre engine generating 220 kw (300 hp) and driving through a fully automatic Allison six-speed gearbox.

“Since starting to work with Shaun I’ve been really impressed by the depth of his understanding of our industry,” continued Mr Burgess. “He’s an expert on his own product, but he’s also extremely knowledgeable about the ancillary equipment we operate and the way it interfaces with the Mercedes-Benz base vehicle.

“His professionalism and customer care are exemplary too. The acquisition of these new Econics was handled very smoothly and we were kept fully informed throughout the process, so we are entirely satisfied that we’ve made the right choice.”

Routine maintenance on the trucks will be carried out at The Recycling Partnership’s own workshop on its headquarters site at Turners Hill, near Crawley.

“The fact that we maintain the trucks in-house was another reason for wanting to standardise the fleet – it makes life easier for our technicians,” continued Mr Burgess. “As SAGA customers we also know that technical advice or support with any more serious issues is just a phonecall away, if we should need it – not that we ever have.”

The new trucks have joined a fleet which runs from The Recycling Partnership’s headquarters and a second depot in Brighton. They collect commercial waste from customers across East and West Sussex, as well as parts of Surrey and Kent. Loads are brought back to the operator’s own processing centre where they are sorted for either recycling or energy generation. The company also offers specialist services including the collection and recycling of items such as food waste, confidential documents and electrical and electronic equipment, as well as commercial and domestic skip hire.

Econic drivers benefit from an unrivalled view of the conditions around them, thanks to the vehicle’s deep, wraparound windscreen and low seating position. The Econic attracts a top, five-star Direct Vision rating from Transport for London, when fitted with the optional fully glazed, bus-style folding side door as specified by The Recycling Partnership. This allows the individual at the wheel to make direct eye contact with cyclists or pedestrians at junctions and in traffic, a key advantage in helping each to understand the other’s intentions.

The new Econic is also equipped with Active Brake Assist 5 emergency braking technology, which boasts an industry-leading pedestrian recognition capability, and an Electronic Parking Brake that is applied automatically when the engine is switched off.

“We’re looking forward to developing an increasingly close partnership with SAGA as we move forward, and are already tapping into Shaun O’Hara’s impressive knowledge of the battery-powered eEconic as we begin to make plans for a possible move to electric transport,” Mr Burgess concluded.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA: the highlights
The new CLA offers more to customers in every dimension: more space, more refinement, more comfort, more intelligence, and more efficiency compared to its predecessor. It is the cleverest car Mercedes-Benz ever made – and the first model in a completely new family of vehicles. Each new model will be available with both electric and high-tech hybrid drives. The debut is made by the all-electric CLA.

To reflect the significance of the new CLA to the United Kingdom, and celebrate its worldwide introduction, an animation featuring the first images of the new model will be projected onto London’s County Hall beginning at 19:00 GMT.

Intuitive: The most intelligent Mercedes-Benz ever thanks to the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS)
Up-to-date for years and always ready for new features: regular over-the-air updates
The new CLA is the first vehicle to fully operate on the in-house developed Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), making it the most intelligent Mercedes-Benz ever. The new AI-enhanced system makes it possible to equip every vehicle with a supercomputer connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. This enables regular over-the-air updates[1] for the most important vehicle functions, including driving assistance systems for the first time. This keeps the CLA up-to-date and attractive for years to come.

On the way to a hyper-personalised digital experience: the fourth MBUX generation
MB.OS marks the start of the fourth MBUX generation. It opens up a new world of personalised experiences and intuitive interaction between human and vehicle, setting new standards in the automotive industry. The new MBUX generation is the first in-car infotainment system to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) from both Microsoft and Google. This combines multiple AI agents in one system for the first time. MB.OS offers maximum flexibility to seamlessly integrate content from third-party providers. The typical Mercedes interface remains, delivering the familiar customer experience.

Exceptionally intuitive and individual: the new MBUX UI/UX concept
The MBUX Superscreen is powered by state-of-the-art high-performance chips and real-time graphics from the Unity Game Engine. The new control and display concept is tailored to individual customer preferences. The further developed MBUX Zero Layer on the central display shows the most important information, suggestions and, for the first time, the most recently used apps1. In the app view, apps can now be moved and grouped into individually named folders, similar to a smartphone. When an app is open, a simple swipe to the left returns to the app view. Another swipe takes the user back to the Zero Layer. Alternatively, they can still go directly to the Zero Layer at any time via the home button.

Intelligent, easy to talk to and empathetic like a friend: the new MBUX Virtual Assistant
With generative AI, the new MBUX Virtual Assistant revolutionises the relationship between vehicle and driver. It enables the kinds of complex, multi-turn dialogues one might have with a friend and has short-term memory. Based on ChatGPT4o and searches with Microsoft Bing, it unites the collective knowledge of the internet. Thanks to Google Gemini, the virtual assistant is also well-versed in navigation-related questions. It can access information from the Google Maps platform to provide users with detailed and personalised answers to questions about navigation, points of interest and much more. The MBUX Virtual Assistant is always present on the Zero Layer as a “living” avatar in the form of the Mercedes-Benz star. During an active dialogue, it recognises emotions and can respond accordingly.

Intelligent navigation you can trust: bespoke Google Maps solution
In the new CLA, the navigation experience is based on Google Maps[2]. The navigation solution developed as part of the partnership between Google and Mercedes-Benz is one of the first integrations of Google Cloud’s new Automotive AI Agent for in-vehicle conversation services with Google Maps. Mercedes-Benz Navigation with Electric Intelligence plans the fastest and most convenient route, including charging stops, based on numerous factors. Integrated visual communication also reaches a new dimension with MBUX Surround Navigation. It seamlessly integrates the driver-assistance view with a 3D representation of the surroundings and route guidance in real-time on the driver display. Drivers benefit from improved situational awareness, seeing what the CLA sees and how the assistance systems support them.

MB.DRIVE sets a new standard with state-of-the-art driving assistance and parking systems
The new CLA models in Europe come as standard with extensive safety features and the DISTRONIC Distance Assist. Additional comfort assistance systems are bundled by Mercedes-Benz under the name MB.DRIVE². MB.DRIVE ASSIST will be optionally available in Europe from market launch. It complements Distance Assist DISTRONIC with Steering Assist, making it a state-of-the-art SAE Level 2 driving assistance system. New in the CLA is Lane Change Assist, which facilitates lane changes with a simple click of the indicator lever. The safety assistance systems can prevent a multitude of accidents.

Effortless on the road: The CLA with EQ technology is the “one-litre car” for the electric age
Remarkably low consumption and high range
The carbon footprint of the new all-electric CLA is reduced by 40 percent over the entire value chain compared to its non-electrified predecessor. With remarkably low consumption and an impressive range in this segment, the CLA is taking electric mobility in everyday life to a new level. The first models to come to markets are the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology (combined energy consumption: 14.1-12.2 kWh/100 km | combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A)[3] and the CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology (combined energy consumption: 14.7-12.5 kWh/100 km | combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A)3. With a range of up to 792 kilometres according to the WLTP³, the 200 kW CLA 250+ with EQ Technology offers a large radius in its class. The CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology with 260 kW is positioned as the performance version at the top end of the model range.

The 800-volt electric architecture makes charging almost as fast as refuelling
The 800-volt system can significantly reduce charging time in conjunction with the new battery generation. The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology can be recharged to a range of up to 325 kilometres[4] within ten minutes. Fast DC charging with up to 320 kW is possible for the CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC.

New battery generation with high energy density and a smaller carbon footprint
The new all-electric models CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC feature the top variant of lithium-ion batteries with a usable energy content of 85 kWh. The cells have anodes that mix silicon oxide with graphite. Compared to the previous battery with conventional graphite anodes, the gravimetric energy density has been increased by up to 20 percent. The volumetric energy density of the cell chemistry is 680 Wh/l. The cobalt content has been further reduced. The new battery generation reduces the carbon footprint by about 30 percent per cell compared to its predecessor. This is thanks to carbon reduction measures, net carbon neutral[5] cell production and the use of electricity from renewable energy sources in anode, cathode and cell housing production.

Sprinter and marathon runner in one: the new two-speed transmission
The two-speed gearbox on the main drive at the rear axle combines dynamism with high efficiency in all situations. The first gear enables excellent acceleration right from the start, a high towing capacity and it also offers great efficiency in urban traffic. The second gear is designed for power delivery at high speeds and high efficiency on the motorway. It ensures outstanding range and long-distance comfort. The top speed is also achieved in the second gear.

“Free” heat for efficient pre-conditioning: multi-source heat pump as standard
The electric CLA is the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to feature an air-to-air heat pump. It no longer takes the detour through a water circuit and, as a so-called multi-source model, can use three energy sources in parallel: the waste heat from the electric drivetrain, the battery, as well as the ambient air. By using this “free” heat, the air-to-air heat pump contributes to the high efficiency of the CLA. It requires only about one-third of the electrical energy that a comparable auxiliary heater would need for the same output.

Flexible for individual needs: all-electric or with high-tech 48-volt hybrid drivetrain
A modern hybrid with three power levels will follow towards the end of the year
All-electric models play a key role in implementing Mercedes-Benz’s sustainable business strategy. However, the wishes and mobility needs of customers in different regions of the world determine the pace of this transformation. Towards the end of the year, the new CLA will also be available as a hybrid with 48-volt technology and an electric motor integrated into the transmission. The modular architecture of the CLA model family allows Mercedes-Benz maximum flexibility in the drive concept and production. The state-of-the-art combustion engine of the CLA hybrid will initially be available in three power levels. Customers will have the choice between front-wheel drive and 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

CLA hybrid models can drive all-electrically and recuperate
The electric motor, inverter and transmission form a highly integrated unit. The electric motor provides intelligent support across the entire speed range. At urban speeds and when less than 20 kW is needed, the hybrid models can drive on electric power alone. So-called electric cruising is possible at speeds of up to around 100 km/h. A special feature of the combustion engine is its ability to recuperate in all eight gears, recovering up to 25 kW of energy.

Gorgeous: emotional expression of athletic power
A desirable statement: athletic proportions and striking character lines
The CLA with EQ Technology captivates with an exciting interplay of intelligence and emotion, redefining desire. The long wheelbase, short overhangs and a powerful GT rear are an emotional expression of athletic power. The car’s sporty proportions are enhanced by a low greenhouse, long bonnet with power domes and large wheels. The car’s muscular and athletic shoulders start at the front wheel arches and extend to the sculptural rear. The clear design language emphasises the sculpted surfaces with reduced lines and precise joints. The striking character lines on the flank create an interesting interplay of light and shade when viewed side-on.

Radiant “face”: panel with illuminated Mercedes-Benz pattern
The iconic and sporty A-shape grille has been reinterpreted for the electric age. The innovative seamless star panel is fully illuminated for the first time on a Mercedes-Benz production vehicle. A total of 142 individually animated LED chrome-effect stars create a distinctive brand signature. One of the few visual differences distinguishing the CLA hybrid is its classic radiator grille. It features a Mercedes-Benz pattern in chrome, framed by an LED lightguide as standard.

Brightens the day and night: star-shaped headlights and taillights
With the optional MULTIBEAM LED headlights, the daytime running lights take the form of a Mercedes-Benz star. Connecting the headlights is a band of light. The taillights are also star-shaped and connected by an illuminated design element. This combination gives the CLA a strong and unique visual presence. In conjunction with the optional MULTIBEAM LED headlights, it forms the new Mercedes-Benz signature. It makes a Mercedes instantly recognisable at all times of the day or night – an unmistakable statement of iconic luxury. The standard-fit LED High Performance headlights have a chrome-plated design element in the shape of a star.

Light-flooded ambiance: panoramic roof fitted as standard for a generous interior feel
All CLA models come as standard with an expansive panoramic roof. This one-piece fixed glass roof has no central brace and extends seamlessly from the windscreen frame to the rear. It provides a new interior experience with an almost unobstructed view upwards. At the same time, the panoramic roof contributes to more generous headroom compared to its predecessor. Heat-insulating laminated safety glass, infrared film and low-emissivity (LowE) coating protect against sunlight and heat.

New spatial experience: minimalist interior design focusing on three iconic high-tech elements
The interior of the CLA offers a new luxury experience in this vehicle class. The design follows the principle of reduction to the essentials. It de-emphasises the underlying structure and focuses on a few iconic high-tech elements. The highlight is the optional, floating MBUX Superscreen, which extends across the entire width of the interior. Behind a large glass surface are the 26-centimetre (10.25-inch) driver display and the 35.6-centimetre (14-inch) centre display. After market launch of the CLA, the MBUX Superscreen will be available as an optional extra with an additional 35.6-centimetre (14-inch display) for the front passenger. Another eye-catcher is the centre console. Appearing to float in mid-air, its high position enhances the sporty feel. As in higher vehicle classes, it is split into two levels. The upper section offers an expansive, three-dimensional trim surface – with an integrated double cup holder and optional wireless smartphone charging cradle. The third high-tech element is the large leather-clad door centre panels, which likewise seem to float. They wrap three-dimensionally over the profile of the pull handle, which is designed in a classic tubular form.

Best-in-class equipment: a reinterpretation of modern luxury at Mercedes-Benz
An attractive and versatile range of colours and materials underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to exceptional design and distinctive features. Options include the new paint colours aqua mint and clear blue metallic as well as newly developed seat upholstery with a technical-looking pearl effect in black/clean white pearl. Also available are trim elements made of open-pore wood, brushed aluminium, a coating with an anodised look and a decorative paper surface that is new in the automotive industry.

Milestone on the road to enhancing raw materials sustainability thanks to an expected recovery rate of more than 96 percent and net CO2 -neutral[1] operation

Plant to generate enough recycled materials to produce more than 50,000 new battery modules per year

Double-digit million-euro investment underpins holistic Mercedes-Benz approach to battery circularity and value creation in Germany

Cooperation with technology partner Primobius and renowned research institutes

Kuppenheim. Mercedes-Benz today opened Europe’s first battery recycling plant with an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process making it the first car manufacturer worldwide[2] to close the battery recycling loop with its own in-house facility. The recycling plant in Kuppenheim, southern Germany, creates a genuine circular economy. This underpins the pioneering spirit and innovative strength of Mercedes-Benz as it strives to significantly reduce the consumption of valuable primary resources. Unlike existing established processes, the expected recovery rate of the mechanical-hydrometallurgical recycling plant is more than 96 percent. Valuable and scarce raw materials such as lithium, nickel and cobalt can be recovered – in a way which is suitable for use in new batteries for future all-electric Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The company has invested tens of millions of euros in the construction of the new battery recycling plant and thus in the value creation in Germany. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Baden-Württemberg’s Environment Minister Thekla Walker visited the plant for the opening ceremony in Kuppenheim, Baden.

“Mercedes-Benz has set itself the goal of building the most desirable cars in a sustainable way. As a pioneer in automotive engineering, Europe’s first integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical battery recycling factory marks a key milestone towards enhancing raw-materials sustainability. Together with our partners from industry and science, we are sending a strong signal of innovative strength for sustainable electric mobility and value creation in Germany and Europe.”
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG

“The future of the automobile is electric, and batteries are an essential component of this. To produce batteries in a resource-conserving and sustainable way, recycling is also key. The circular economy is a growth engine and, at the same time, an essential building block for achieving our climate targets! I congratulate Mercedes-Benz for its courage and foresight shown by this investment in Kuppenheim. Germany remains a cutting-edge market for new and innovative technologies.”
Olaf Scholz, Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany

Mercedes-Benz’s technology partner for the battery recycling factory is Primobius, a joint venture between German plant and mechanical engineering company SMS group and Australian process technology developer Neometals. The plant is receiving funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of a scientific research project with three German universities. The project looks at the entire process chain for recycling, including logistics and reintegration concepts. The partners are thus making an important contribution to future scaling of the battery recycling industry in Germany.

Integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical recycling concept
For the first time in Europe, the Mercedes-Benz battery recycling plant covers all steps from shredding battery modules to drying and processing active battery materials. The mechanical process sorts and separates plastics, copper, aluminium and iron in a complex, multi-stage process. The downstream hydrometallurgical process is dedicated to the so-called black mass. These are the active materials that make up the electrodes of the battery cells. The valuable metals cobalt, nickel and lithium are extracted individually in a multi-stage chemical process. These recyclates are of battery quality and therefore suitable for use in the production of new battery cells.

Unlike the pyrometallurgy established in Europe today, the hydrometallurgical process is less-intensive in terms of energy consumption and material waste. Its low process temperatures of up to 80 degrees Celsius mean it consumes less energy. In addition, like all Mercedes-Benz production plants, the recycling plant operates in a net carbon-neutral[3] manner. It is supplied with 100 percent green electricity. The roof area of the 6800 square-metre building is equipped with a photovoltaic system with a peak output of more than 350 kilowatts.

The Mercedes-Benz battery recycling plant in Kuppenheim has an annual capacity of 2,500 tonnes. The recovered materials feed into the production of more than 50,000 battery modules for new all-electric Mercedes-Benz models. The knowledge gained could help scale up production volumes in the medium to long term.

Holistic approach to battery value creation
Mercedes-Benz takes a holistic approach to the circularity of battery systems and considers three core topics: circular design, value retention and closing the material loop. With its Design for Circularity approach, the company takes the entire battery technology value chain into account from the outset. At the Mercedes-Benz eCampus in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, which opened in 2024, circular thinking flows into the development of new battery cells. Battery production for electric Mercedes-Benz vehicles is net carbon-neutral3 in battery factories on three continents. Local battery production is a key factor for the success of the Mercedes-Benz sustainable business strategy.

In line with circular thinking and to conserve resources, the company offers reconditioned batteries as spare parts for all its electric vehicles. In addition, its Mercedes-Benz Energy subsidiary has established a successful business model with large-scale stationary storage applications. Batteries that are no longer suitable for vehicle use can enjoy a second life as part of an energy storage system.

For Mercedes-Benz, sustainability means creating long-term value for as many people as possible which is why it pursues a sustainable business strategy. This means sustainability is a fundamental component of a holistic corporate mindset that embraces wider ecological, social and economic aspects.

Statements from the opening of the Mercedes-Benz battery recycling plant in Kuppenheim

“We are systematically deepening our expertise in the battery value chain. Following the opening of the Mercedes-Benz eCampus for development of new battery cell chemistries in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, we are now sustainably closing the raw materials loop in Kuppenheim. The innovative technology enables us to recover valuable raw materials from the battery with the highest possible degree of purity. This turns today’s batteries into tomorrow’s sustainable mine for raw materials. The new battery recycling plant strengthens the role of the Mercedes-Benz production network with vehicle and drivetrain plants in Europe.”
Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, responsible for Production, Quality & Supply Chain Management

“Battery recycling is of great importance to Baden-Württemberg as a state with such a strong automotive sector. Closing the loop on the value chain reduces dependencies, increases resilience in times of crisis and can smooth peaks and troughs in the availability of raw materials. Mercedes-Benz is a pioneer in this respect: With the integrated battery recycling plant, Mercedes-Benz has developed a sustainable approach for dealing with limited resources and is therefore making a valuable contribution to a truly circular economy. We are proud that in this federal state of innovators, we are also at the forefront in this field.”
Thekla Walker MdL, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Energy Baden-Württemberg

“Mercedes-Benz Project G-Class Past II Future” is a new art piece that catapults 1990s spirit into contemporary lifestyle – inspired by fashion designer, music producer and creative director, NIGO

The one-off art piece is the inspiration for the new, limited-edition series, Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future

Stuttgart/Shanghai. At The City of Genius show in Shanghai on October 19, 2024, Mercedes-Benz and Moncler took the bold next step in their collaboration. Alongside the launch of the brand campaign, “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past”, the partners unveiled a one-off art piece, “Project G-Class Past II Future”, inspired by NIGO. It’s based on a G-Class from the 90s that was completely restored. NIGO reworked numerous design elements inside and out to revive the design and brings it into the cultural landscape of the present. The G-Class Past II Future is a new G-Class model with a limited run of only 20 cars and is inspired by the art piece. At the show, the audience also got a sneak preview of Moncler’s new collection of urban, gender-neutral fashion designed by Mercedes-Benz and Moncler together with NIGO. Both the limited-edition G-Class and the capsule collection will be launched in April 2025. Alongside Mercedes-Benz and NIGO, the Shanghai event additionally hosted several other artists, who presented their own respective collaborations with Moncler: A$AP Rocky and Willow Smith, Edward Enninful (OBE), FRGMT by Hiroshi Fujiwara, Gilga Farm by Donald Glover, LuLu Li and Palm Angels. In addition to the Moncler Genius 2024 lineup, special showcases were presented by Rick Owens and Jil Sander.

“NIGO’s immense creative talent and our co-creation with Moncler are taking us into an exciting urban setting. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future is a very special new ‘twist’ on our icon. This limited edition is a fresh take on 90s style and the character that’s made the G-Class a timeless favourite. Going from inspiring art to engaging products marks an important step in our creative cooperation and offers a new brand experience captured by the zeitgeist.”
Bettina Fetzer, Vice President Communications & Marketing Mercedes-Benz AG

Art piece Project G-Class Past II Future inspired by NIGO
NIGO’s creation is the second art piece to emerge from the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler. Like the PROJECT MONDO G, launched at Moncler’s “The Art of Genius” show in London in February 2023, this art piece merges the distinctively quilted aesthetic of the Moncler puffer jacket with the unmistakeable edginess of the G-Class. Measuring 4.5 metres in length, 1.9 metres in width and 2.0 metres in height, the art piece features a minimalistic, matte two-tone contemporary colour palette in olive green and grey, which is offset by striking exterior accents in black and gold. The clean lines of the classic G-Class cabriolet give it a contemporary attitude. Hallmark G-Class functionality and design cues are retained and reinterpreted. These include the iconic spare wheel on the rear tailgate, black steel wheels in the 90s design, a foldable windscreen, and a gold-coloured fuel can. The interior has also been reworked. Among other elements, G-Class enthusiast Devon Turnbull – known for his immersive audio installations – has designed a sound system that fits perfectly into the vehicle concept, both technically and visually. The music “boom boxes” are mounted on the convertible top linkage and – like the entire roof and the speakers – can be removed. Its chequered seat upholstery pattern is an interpretation of a design element typical of earlier G-Class models. Accents in orange and gold draw parallels with the collaborative fashion collection by Mercedes-Benz, Moncler and NIGO.

“For me, the 90s were among the most influential decades from a cultural and creative standpoint. Electronic music and the hip-hop scene arose as a new expression of urban character. I wanted to integrate that vibe and energy into the design of the Project G-Class Past II Future by interpreting that legacy for a new contemporary era.”
Fashion designer, music producer and creative director, NIGO

Limited edition Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future
Both the limited-edition G-Class and the capsule collection are the collaboration’s first products available for purchase. As a crowning moment in the 45th anniversary year of the G-Class, the new edition shows how timeless this brand icon remains, and how capably it adapts to contemporary lifestyles. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future references NIGO’s one-off art piece and is based on the new G 450 d (combined energy consumption: 10.0-8.7 l/100 km | combined CO₂ emissions: 261-227 g/km | CO₂ class: G)[1] and the new G 500 (combined energy consumption: 12.3-10.9 l/100 km | combined CO₂ emissions: 281-248 g/km | CO₂ class: G)1. It has two-tone exterior paintwork in green and grey, the G-Class typical chequered upholstery and a rear-mounted spare wheel with the collaboration logo on its cover. Black exterior accents include the window frames, light metal alloy wheels and the signature bumper guard running the full length of the flanks. The latter features the Past II Future lettering. In the interior, this lettering can be found on the grab handle. On the centre console, the vehicle’s “1 of 20” limited series number is inscribed. The 20 cars will be delivered to customers in April 2025.

The capsule collection
The gender-neutral fashion collection incorporates 90s influences with contemporary street style elements. Following “The City of Genius” show preview, the pieces shown will be winnowed down into a capsule collection that will be available for purchase starting in April 2025. It will mainly consist of souvenir and college jackets, hoodies, checked shirts and Bermuda shorts as well as lightweight down and field jackets, parkas and windbreakers with a vintage look. The colour palette is classic: Blue, black, green and white dominate – complemented by orange accents. Many of the garments feature elaborate prints that merge archival photos of the collaboration partners. Jackets and pants are made using raw denim, with one exception: a satin jacket that combines the visual language and logos of both brands. The jacket captures the spirit of their collaboration, especially in combination with the grey checked shirts.

Brand campaign “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past”
The unbreakable bond between past and future is reflected in the brand campaign accompanying this next step in the Mercedes-Benz x Moncler collaboration – together with NIGO and photographer Thibaut Grevet. With the motto, “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past”, it visualises the evolution of the collaboration from an imaginary cosmos to its arrival in metropolitan life. A city rooftop symbolises the campaign’s urban look and feel. The rooftop’s angular metallic surfaces provide the perfect backdrop for showcasing the streetwear collection by the partners Mercedes-Benz, Moncler and NIGO. The campaign’s aim is to highlight the overarching theme of taking inspiration from the past, harnessing creativity and translating it into something new. The global campaign will be rolled out across each brand’s respective websites and social media channels. In addition to the main campaign film, a making-of video by Theodor Guelat gives a closer, behind-the-scenes peek into the collaboration with NIGO.
